The Kennebec Valley Art Association has issued an open call for exhibition proposals for the Harlow Gallery in Hallowell, Maine for the 2012 exhibition season.

The Harlow Gallery has been owned and operated by the Kennebec Valley Art Association, a 501(c)3  nonprofit membership based organization that has been supporting the arts and artists of central Maine for over half a century. An exhibition committee will meets in October to determine the Harlow’s exhibition schedule for the upcoming year.  Proposals must be received at the Harlow Gallery at 160 Water Street in Hallowell on or before October 1, 2011.

Proposed exhibitions may be solo, group or themed-open, invitational or juried.  Please note that we generally limit solo shows to one per year, therefore submissions for small group shows are encouraged, or themed shows open to submissions from other artists.

It was a different world not so long ago.

Privileged white southern women would graduate from college, get married early and inherit the African-American maids (who had raised them) to work in their homes and raise the next generation of privileged children.  In some instances, a maid was passed on to a daughter by a parent’s inheritance, like chattel.  The maids were privy to everything that went on in their white households, but were forbidden from even using the bathroom in the homes they cleaned every day.
