Social Media Monday - Do you really want your friends seeing that?
Social Media Monday - Do you really want your friends seeing that?

As an active Facebook user I am always conscious of what I am posting and what is being posted on my behalf. Although Facebook statistics change daily and vary based on their sources, wrote a blog back in February stating the following:

Facebook User Statistics Infographic Highlights:

  1. Facebook currently has 845 million active users.
  2. Facebook accounts for 1 out of every 5 pageviews on the internet worldwide.
  3. Facebook users share over 100 billion connections collectively.
  4. Over 50% of the population in North American uses Facebook.
  5. 250 million photos are uploaded to Facebook daily.
  6. There are 2.7 billion likes every single day on Facebook.
  7. 57% of Facebook user are female (43% male).
  8. The social media giant has 425 million mobile users.
  9. The average Facebook user spends 20 minutes on the site per visit.

So with this much activity it is very important that you manage what is being posted and who is able to see it.  If you have ever played a game, signed up for a contest or wanted to read an article you may have seen this:

Do you read the fine print or just click play game or go to app?  This is one of the things that will come up on your timeline if you blindly go to the app without taking precautions.

Do you want your friends, family or coworkers seeing this?  Are you self employed or do you do direct sales?

Before someone decides to do business with you they will check on your online profile which includes Facebook.

See these apps want you to click on their enticing story lines or games.  They make money off the advertisers that you are seeing on their article.  They want you to have the post on your page so that your friends and families get enticed to click on the link as well.  Games are addicting.  Not only do games have advertisers but they also have upgrades that their users pay for.  The more visibility the more users.    They also post it on their app page.  The blacked out area has the names of my friends that have read articles, belong to the app etc.

So what to do?  Manage your app settings.  Follow the following tutorial and you will be able to have your cake and eat it to.

Go to your account settings.  The tutorial below may be of assistance.

Here is the work comes in.  Step one - Change who can see your posts and then delete this post can also. See photo below

If it is an app that you just wanted to check out or a contest you entered or you are just not interested in it anymore then delete it.

I love Facebook, it is one of my favorite tools for networking, connecting with family, friends and marketing but like anything you need to manage it. With anything there is good and bad.  Facebook is not going away anytime soon.  Enjoy it and utilize it but make sure you are aware of what you are allowing to happen.
