Maine Can Do Better to Hold "Rally to Save Health Care"

AUGUSTA, ME - Concerned citizens from across the state are gathering outside the Maine State House Wednesday, January 19th at 11:30am, to show their support for the Affordable Care Act.

The rally is to urge Governor LePage, Attorney General Schneider, and the Maine Legislature to support the Affordable Care Act, which helps all Mainers afford quality health insurance. 

WHERE: Outside the State House in-between the State House and the Cross State Office Building
WHEN: Wednesday, January 19th, at 11:30am
WHAT: Rally to Save Heath Care
WHO: Maine Can Do Better Coalition, including AARP, American Lung Association in Maine, Engage Maine, Family Planning Association of Maine, Maine Center for Economic Policy, Maine Council of Senior Citizens, Maine Equal Justice Partners, Maine People’s Alliance, Maine State Employees Association - SEIU Local 1989, Maine Women's Lobby, and Planned Parenthood of Northern New England.

38th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

The Maine Right to Life Committee will hold its annual Hands Around the Capitol Rally and March on Saturday, January 15, 2011.  This event is where we publicly recognize and mourn the Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade, while providing an intense impact on those who witness our solemn March.  This year marks the 38th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade.  The Rally begins at 11:00 AM at St. Michael’s Gym, 56 Sewall Street in Augusta.  We begin our March to the Capitol at 12:15 PM.

Future of the Forest: New Bioproducts Focus of SWOAM meeting

AUGUSTA – The Small Woodland Owners of Maine (SWOAM) will hear about the future uses of wood from two University of Maine experts on bioproducts during its annual meeting Wednesday, Jan. 12, starting at 10 a.m. at the Augusta Civic Center. The event is part of the 70th annual Agriculture Trades Show held from Jan. 11-13, and is free and open to the public.

Dr. Hemant Pendse, chair of the UM Department of Chemical Engineering, and Dr. Robert Wagner, director of the School of Forest Resources, will speak about new opportunities for landowners to make use of fiber and other forest resources. The panel follows the group’s annual meeting, and the public and prospective members are welcome.

“Each year we put together an informative program that’s of great interest to anyone who owns forest land in Maine,” said Executive Director Tom Doak.

With CSA's and CSF's you commit to purchasing a share of the coming harvest before the season begins. The benefit? You get to support local farms and fishermen while getting your locally grown and harvested food direct from the producer at a fair price.

Come to one of the eleven fair locations statewide to: learn about buying a share; become acquainted with local seasonal foods; meet your local farmers and fishermen; and discover how you can grow a relationship with them. Community Supported Fisheries may not be represented in all locations.

"Meet Your Farmers and Fishermen: a celebration of Community Supported Agriculture and Fisheries" will take place on Sunday, February 27, from 1 to 3 p.m.

MSCC Announces Business Day at Statehouse 2011

The Maine State Chamber of Commerce is once again sponsoring Business Day at the State House on Tuesday, March 29th from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. in cooperation with local chambers of commerce.    Last year, we had over 250 business people from around the state attend the event and from all accounts, it was a tremendous success!  This year we would like your help to make this day a success once again! 
The purpose of this event is to emphasize the importance of preserving and retaining our existing jobs, strengthening our economy through the creation of new opportunities and keeping Maine businesses competitive in this very fragile economy.

AUGUSTA, Maine – Building on the success of previous years, the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands in coming weeks is sponsoring six exciting days of winter events at state parks around Maine.

During January and February, Maine families and other visitors will be able to enjoy fun, affordable, day-long outdoor activities at some of the most beautiful locales in the state, according to Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL) officials.

Two major ice-fishing derbies will be held, as will four winter-fun days when families can try out such activities as cross-country skiing, sledding, snow shoeing and dog sled rides. 

“This is the third year of our ‘Take It Outside’ winter events, and we’re hoping for as great a response as we have seen in the past,” Will Harris, BPL director, said.
