Local Organizations Partner to Bring Better Nutrition to the Classroom

Local Organizations Partner to Bring Better Nutrition to the Classroom

Generations is expanding its ability to help provide fresh and local produce year-round to Mainers of all ages through partnerships with Healthy Communities of the Capital Area (HCCA), the Kennebec County Sherriff’s Department, and other local organizations like the Good Shepherd Food Bank.

In the fall of 2014, Spectrum Generations joined forces with Healthy Communities of the Capital Area (HCCA), a Local Healthy Maine Partnership, in a 2-year USDA Farm to School grant to facilitate purchasing, distribution, and processing of local foods in school meals.  This grant was awarded to HCCA to assist the Kennebec County Sherriff’s Office with their Kennebec’s Restorative Community Harvest, formerly known at the Inmate Garden Project.

Beautiful Tapestry of Color Throughout Maine as Leaves Rapidly Change

Fall Foliage Report Week 4

From Fort Kent in the north down through Bangor in the central part of the state, the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry is now reporting peak leaf color with low leaf drop of less than 30%.

“The colors of fall are reflecting off the water throughout Moosehead Lake in Greenville (Zone 5) as the foliage is approaching peak conditions this weekend,” according to Gale Ross, Fall Foliage spokesperson.  “Forest rangers are reporting that the maples throughout Maine are casting fiery red colors in central and western Maine as well, with low (30%) leaf drop,” Ross noted.

Maine’s official foliage website http://www.mainefoliage.com/ provides weekly reports by e-mail and an opportunity to share photos of favorite spots in Maine to watch the leaves turn color.

Get help with your Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Choices

Medicare Annual Enrollment Oct 15 thru Dec 7

If you are like most people, the prospect of trying to figure out which Medicare Drug Plan is the right one for you is overwhelming.  There are more than 25 plans available for 2015 and they all cover different medications, at different dosages, and varying prices.

Every year there seem to be changes to many plans, from increased monthly premiums and cost of medications, to the elimination of some covered drugs, or even entire plans.  Spectrum Generations, central Maine’s Area Agency on Aging and Aging and Disability Resource Center(ADRC) encourage people to do the research to make sure they will be enrolled in the plan that will work the best for them next year – and maybe even save some money in the process.  The time that you can make a change for 2015 plans is during open enrollment – October 15, 2014 to December 7, 2014.
